Why go
A small green under an enormous mountain.
A short hole can still make you feel very small.
Devil’s Cauldron is the fourth hole at Fairmont Banff Springs. An elevated tee looks across a lake toward a green beneath the face of Mount Rundle, with bunkers adding detail to a scene already dominated by rock and water.
There are 27 holes, and your choice matters
Tunnel Mountain is a separate nine. Booking the Stanley Thompson 18 is the clearest way to include the Devil’s Cauldron you came to see.
More of the story
The hole works on two scales. There is the immediate task of choosing a club and carrying the water. Then there is the mountain, which makes the entire golfing problem look briefly insignificant.
That tension is why a single par three can anchor the memory of a whole trip. You came to hit a shot, but the pause before it may be the part that stays with you.
Make it happen
How to play Banff Springs
- Select the Stanley Thompson 18 when booking: Devil’s Cauldron is its fourth hole.
- If choosing the Fairholme rotation, ask which championship nine is included. The routing can change, so the signature hole is not assured.
Before you go
Check seasonal opening and weather with the course before planning your travel day around a tee time.
A playing thought
At the fourth, choose a club for the actual carry and the day’s wind. The mountain backdrop is enormous; the target still deserves a calm, ordinary swing.
