Why go

The landmark beside your round is a Bhutanese dzong.

A golf course can introduce you to a city as effectively as a viewpoint can.

Royal Thimphu’s history begins in 1971, when Bhutan’s first nine-hole course was built near Tashichho Dzong. Golf here sits within the landscape of the capital, rather than apart from it in a purpose-built resort enclave.

It began with browns

The club traces its origins to 1971 near Tashichho Dzong. Its earliest version used browns instead of greens, a small detail in a distinctive local golf history.

More of the story

The dzong is a monastery and fortress complex with an important place in Bhutan’s civic and religious life. Its presence gives the golfing setting a character that cannot be separated from Thimphu itself.

This is an invitation to slow down and connect a round with the place around it. A few hours on a course can become one part of a wider day in the mountain capital, rather than the only reason to make the journey.

How to play Royal Thimphu

  1. Contact Royal Thimphu directly with your dates and number of players; ask the club to confirm visitor access.
  2. Coordinate golf with your Bhutan travel arrangements. Request club hire, caddie needs and dress requirements before arriving.

Before you go

Fit the round into time already reserved in Thimphu, rather than assuming a walk-up tee time will be available.

A playing thought

Give the first few holes time to establish your distances and rhythm. On a compact course, placement is a better starting point than trying to overpower it.
