Why go
Most courses move the pin. This one moves the entire green.
There is a moment after the tee shot when an ordinary golf hole would ask you to walk. Here, you wait for a boat.
The 14th at The Coeur d’Alene Resort plays to a real floating island in Lake Coeur d’Alene. An underwater cable system repositions the green, so its distance from the tee can change between setups. It stays in place while golfers play it; this is not a moving-target shot.
The commute starts before the first tee
The resort’s mahogany water taxis take about seven minutes to reach the course. The little Putter boat at the 14th is a separate crossing.
More of the story
Once the group has played from the tee, the electric boat called Putter ferries golfers out to finish the hole. The crossing gives everyone a little extra time to discuss what just happened. A good shot gets a victory lap. A bad one gets a captive audience.
The pleasure is in the whole sequence: the island sitting apart from the shore, the commitment of the carry, then the unlikely little commute to your ball. The scorecard records a par three. The group chat gets the boat ride.
Make it happen
How to play Coeur d’Alene
- Reserve through the resort’s tee-time page, or call its golf team. Ask for the full round that includes the floating 14th.
- If arriving by resort water taxi, arrange club transfer with the bell desk. Golf bags travel separately from passengers.
Before you go
Choose your date before comparing packages; seasonal availability and the green’s daily position vary.
A playing thought
At 14, get today’s carry from your forecaddie and pick a club for the middle of the island. The boat ride is included in the story whether or not the tee shot is.
