Why go

Ocean on one side. Mount Fuji in the distance.

The Izu coast supplies the foreground. On a clear day, Mount Fuji supplies the distant punctuation.

Kawana Hotel’s two courses follow the shore on Japan’s Izu Peninsula. The Fuji Course was designed by C. H. Alison and opened in 1936, combining the area’s natural contours with the deep bunkers for which the course is known.

A classic walking round

Prince describes the Fuji experience as a walk with a course attendant. That pace suits a coast whose best views arrive gradually.

More of the story

This is a different sort of unusual golf experience: less a single surprise than a sustained sense of place. Sea views, the coastal terrain and the possibility of Mount Fuji on the horizon make the setting difficult to mistake for anywhere else.

Give the round time to unfold. The course’s appeal is not contained in one photograph of one green, and a distant mountain view is a bonus rather than something the weather owes you.

Make it happen

How to play Kawana

  1. Reserve through Kawana Hotel and explicitly request the Fuji Course. The Oshima Course is a different round.
  2. Confirm your hotel stay and golf together, including the walking/caddie arrangements and any equipment you need.

Before you go

The hotel lists year-round golf by reservation, with seasonal hours. A clear view of Mount Fuji depends on weather.

A playing thought

Listen to your caddie around the small targets and deep bunkers. Choose the part of the green that leaves a manageable next shot.
